Madoka movie 3

April 15, 2014

Puella Magi Madoka Magica The Movie : Rebellion to be more precise.

Originally I wasn’t supposed to write about anime on this blog, but I do have some 30 non-anime posts by now so I guess every now and then shouldn’t be a problem.

Anyway, to┬áthe Madoka movie. The whole movie and the 12 episode anime series it’s based on thrive on dramatic twists and surprise reveals, and this review will contain spoilers on both. You have been warned.

Beauty and the Beast

August 30, 2013

As if anyone needed a plot summary of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, it’s about an adventurous young woman who feels lonely in a village full of stupid and boring people and an unwanted suitor candidate, but her life changes for the better when she gets involved with a beast who is actually a prince yadda yadda yadda.

During my latest viewing of the movie I paid attention to how naturally the plot flows. Of course Belle’s father is going to ask for help, and of course nobody takes him seriously, Gaston’s plan makes a lot of sense… There are no surprise twists, but they really aren’t needed anyway.

Despicable Me 2

August 3, 2013

Despicable Me 2 was an unusual movie experience to me, since I’m used to going to the movies during midday (when the tickets are cheaper), and I usually don’t manage to get there until the film has been running for a while, so the theatres are always pretty empty when I’m there. But this time the film was apparently new enough and I guess in summer people have more time to go to the during daytime and not in the evening, so there were like more than 30 spectators.

Review contains some spoilers. Images taken from google.

Despicable Me 2 continues where the first instalment left; the now-reformed villain Gru is taking care of the three little girls he adopted. Suddenly he is kidnapped by an Anti-Villain League agent Lucy Wilde. The Anti-Villain League is trying to get back a dangerous chemical that was stolen, and they’re hoping that Gru, being an ex-villain, could be useful to them. For the assignment Gru is paired with Lucy, and at the same time the girls and Gru’s neighbours are hoping for Gru to get a girlfriend. Dun dun dunnn, where could this be going?

I think I should either change the name of the blog to “Hapuriainen’s animation blog” or watch a Disney movie next, now half of the posts are not about Disney at all.

This time it’s Anastasia’s turn. The movie tells an alternative version of history about how Anastasia, daughter of tsar Nicholas II, didn’t die when the tsar family was executed. Instead, she loses her memory and grows in an orphanage as ‘Anya’. When she leaves the orphanage ten years later she decides to head to Paris, since she believes she’ll find her family and past there. She teams up with Dimitri and Vladimir, con-men who don’t know who she really is, but who plan to use her likeness to Anastasia in paintings (duh) to get the prize money for bringing the real Anastasia to her grandmother in Paris. Meanwhile, an evil sorcerer Rasputin plots to kill Anastasia to end her family life for good.

In general the plot works pretty well, but I didn’t like the amnesia plot point. Sure, it’s absolutely necessary for anything else in the movie to work at all, but how it’s written makes it look very contrived and the exposition dialogue telling it to the audience feels forced.
