Anastasia – wait, what?

January 9, 2014

When I was going through the movies my relatives have collected to my grandma’s house I came across a VHS tape for Anastasia. For some reason I wanted to check the package, which lead to a surprise. The cover was familiar, but the text on the back was not. “A family friend takes the unconscious Anastasia to a farmhouse. Since she has lost her memory, the farmer couple lies that she is their daughter, and she is put to hard work. One day Anastasia meets Aleksander, who helps her escape from the evil family and discover her royal heritage”.

Uh, what? I’ve seen the movie already, and there was no evil adoptive family, she was in an orphanage! And the dude was called Dimitri! And the movie was definitely feature-length, but the VHS says this story is only 50 minutes! I must find out what is going on.

Snow White

December 31, 2013

When I’m ranking the Disney Princesses in my head, it’s always easy to remember the ones I dislike and the ones I like. Snow White, however, doesn’t exactly belong to either of the two groups, and she’s kind of an odd non-entity in my Disney world. Which is very good for her I guess, because I was expecting to find her the worst of the bunch when I first saw the movie.

Some screen shots from Disney Wiki and google.

Who she is

Snow White is the princess in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Her evil stepmother is upset because Snow White is prettier than her, so she orders her to be killed. Snow White manages to avoid the murder attempt, and after wandering alone in the woods she finds the house of the seven dwarfs. She befriends the dwarfs and makes herself at home, but their merry lives are to be changed after a suspicious old lady comes to offer an apple for Snow White.

Tangled has been in my Top Tier ever since I saw it, but lately I feel it has been going down. Not fast enough to fall to the lower tier, but that may be the case some day.

In Tangled we have a baby princess Rapunzel, whose hair has healing powers. A woman named Gothel wants the power to herself, so she kidnaps Rapunzel, and raises her as her own locked in a hidden tower. When Rapunzel grows up she starts to want to leave the tower despite Gothel’s warnings and protests, and she gets the chance when a passerby thief tries to use her tower as a hiding place. She blackmails the thief to act as her guide, and the two set off to watch the annual floating light festival held at the nearby city. Unsurprisingly a romance starts to form, but problems ensue when Gothel realises that Rapunzel has fled, and the thief has to deal with the downsides of his career choice.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 impressions so far

December 19, 2013

Frozen has been a bit lonely in the pre-release impressions category, but now with the release of the first proper trailer How to Train Your Dragon 2 shall accompany it. To those who don’t know what the first Dragon was about, it had a nerdy viking boy Hiccup befriending a dragon he calls Toothless despite vikings and dragons being enemies otherwise, and problems arising when his forbidden friendship is discovered.

This post will be about the trailer and a few articles I’ve read, and they were pretty spoilery. So, potential spoilers under the cut I guess.

Sleeping Beauty

December 16, 2013

The initial plan was to review both the princess and the movie, but now I’m three movies behind… Let’s start catching up with the most recent watch. In Sleeping Beauty the evil fairy is upset about not getting invited to Princess Aurora’s birthday party, so she curses her to prick her finger on a spindle of a spinning wheel and die. The good fairies change the spell from death to sleep, and take the baby princess away from the palace to be safe. Aurora grows up, and unsurprisingly pricks her finger despite all the precautions. Luckily she has a prince for a boyfriend, who can break the spell with a love’s first kiss.

Review contains spoilers in case you somehow don’t know what happens in Disney’s Sleeping Beauty. Screen shots from Disney Wiki and Google.

Next up is Aurora, the third member of my bottom 3 Disney Princesses. After I’m done with her there’s only “I kind of dislike this character” “I’m indifferent to this character” and “I like this character” princesses left, so hopefully the following character reviews will be less whiney.

Some screen shots from, others from google (because disneyscreencaps removed its Disney content before I was done. Where am I now going to get my HD screen shots?).

Who she is

Aurora is the princess from Sleeping Beauty. When she was a baby  an evil sorceress cursed her to prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and die on her 16th birthday. A fairy godmother changed the spell from death into a deep sleep, and a true love’s kiss would wake her up. The king and queen sent her to live with the fairy godmothers to be safe. Once she’s grown up and her 16th birthday approaches she meets the guy from her dream, and the two fall in love. Unfortunately for her she’s expected to marry a prince. Then despite the precautions she pricks her finger anyway, and then it’s up to her boyfriend and the fairy godmothers to save the day.

Fourth in the Character Review whining series is Jasmine, the princess from Aladdin and the only one who isn’t the main character of her film. And whom I don’t like either now that we’re at it, she’s probably my fourth least favourite.

Screen shots from

Who she is

Jasmine is the princess in Aladdin. She is faced with a difficult situation when the law orders her to marry a prince within three days, but she hasn’t found anyone she’d want to marry, and the suitor candidates don’t please her. She decides to run away, and ends up meeting a street rat Aladdin, with whom she has an adventure and falls in love. Once the villain is defeated the two lovebirds must also conquer the problem that Aladdin is not a prince and thus ineligible to marry the princess.

Korra s2 ep 13-14

November 20, 2013

Book Two : Spirits, Chapter Thirteen : Darkness Falls and Chapter Fourteen : Light in the Dark

Welll, it’s over now, and the blog will now probably get back to what it was supposed to be about (animated movies).

In the season finale we have an epic battle between Korra and her uncle, powered by the good and bad spirits respectively. Meanwhile, Tenzin and family deal with their inner demons and resque Jinora, and Korra’s cousins turn on their dad. In the epic battle the uncle manages to remove the Avatar spirit from Korra, and he also cuts her connection from the past Avatars. But with a pep talk from Tenzin Korra turns her spirit into a blue giant, and with the help from Jinora’s ligth powarz (???) she manages to regain the Avatar spirit and defeat her uncle. In the end Korra decides to leave the spirit portals open.

Korra s2 ep 11-12

November 16, 2013

Book Two : Spirits, Chapter Eleven : Night of a Thousand Stars and Chapter Twelve : Harmonic Convergence

I’m back on track again and not a week late! (it’s quite difficult to write about an episode from two weeks ago when you’re already seen the most recent episode…)

This time Varrick is outed as a bad(ish) guy, Bolin finally does something worthwhile, everyone admits Mako’s superior detective skills and Korra and Mako sort of get together because Korra has conveniently forgotten about their break up. The main cast doesn’t get help from the Republic city, so they head to the Southern spirit portal themselves. They get captured, and the evil uncle reveals that his plan is to fuse with the evil spirit to become a Dark Avatar. Thanks to Bumi they manage to escape and get to the spirit world. Unsurprisingly (since there’s still two episodes left), Korra fails to close the spirit portal and the evil spirit is released.
